Things I Love

Books I Love: Historical Fiction

Let’s talk about our favorite books! I’ll go first… 🙂 {I figured the best way to list them would be by genre. Here are the links to the others.}*Note – I would say that 90% of these are clean and/or Christian books. If they are not, I have tagged them as such!

The King’s Daughter by Suzanne Martel (not Christian, fairly clean)-I’ve owned this book for years, and I re-read it probably once a year or so. I love Jeanne Chatel, she’s such a courageous and plucky heroine who will do anything to protect her little family.

Courting Morrow Little by Laura Frantz-A beautiful story of forgiveness and love set in the Kentucky wilderness. Read it! You’ll thank me later!

ANYTHING WRITTEN BY SARAH SUNDIN-Me: Do you like WWII fiction? No? Try Sarah Sundin, you’ll love her anyway. (And if your answer is yes, read her books! You will love them!-When someone asks me what to read next, I say Sarah Sundin. OR….

ANYTHING WRITTEN BY CONNILYN COSSETTE-She writes historical Biblical fiction. Her Out of Egypt series kept me up at night – in a good way, of course, because I couldn’t put it down!

The Captive Heart by Michelle Griep-This book was amazing! I’ve read several of her other books and loved them as well, but this one is always the first that comes to mind.

The Hawthorne House series by Kristi Ann Hunter-This series is incredible. I love every single character. I love how the characters interact with each other from book to book. I love the romance and the time period (Regency, I mean, hello!) Okay, so if you haven’t read this series, you probably should!

Christy by Catherine Marshall-Sure, you probably watched the 90s TV show with Kellie Martin and the swoon-worthy Stewart Finlay-McLennan as Dr. Neil MacNeill, but HAVE YOU READ THE BOOK? -(Fun fact: Catherine Marshall also wrote a book loosely based on her own life – called Julie, haha! The book takes place in a fictional town called Alderton, PA which is based on the real-life Johnstown, PA…and in real-life I used to live near Johnstown and actually read the book while I was working there!)

ANYTHING WRITTEN BY DEANNE GIST-My personal favorite is probably A Bride in the Bargain, but they are all wonderful, and I think the way she writes about the tension and attraction between her characters is amazing!

Boston Jane series by Jennifer L. Holm (not Christian, fairly clean if I remember correctly)-It’s more of a YA series, but still worth the read. And yes, I have re-read it as an adult several times. Read it for yourself and you’ll understand the pull!

Bloody Jack series by L.A. Meyer (not Christian, and not entirely clean)-This is a YA series! Mary “Jacky” Faber is a young orphan girl who disguises herself as a ship’s boy in order to get away from street gangs in London. On her adventures, she becomes a spy, has a price put on her head, meets Napoleon, and generally causes madness and mayhem everywhere she goes. Super fun reads, lots of historical events and figures, and lots of laughs.
